Carnival Behind the Scene Tours

For those who want to get an insider’s look at the inner-workings of a Carnival “Fun Ship,” the line has created Behind the Fun, a guided tour that provides guests with a unique insight into the company’s shipboard operations.

Currently available on the Carnival Valor and Carnival Conquest, the program will be rolled out to all 12 of the line’s ships operating voyages of seven days or longer by the end of September.

The informative three-and-a-half-hour tour offers participants a behind-the-scenes look at a wide range of shipboard venues that are normally off limits to guests. During the tour, key shipboard personnel, including the captain, chief engineer, chef de cuisine and other department heads, share their vast knowledge in their particular area of expertise.

Behind the Fun begins with a stop backstage in the main show lounge where participants can see exactly what goes into creating Carnival’s award-winning revues. The tour then moves on to normally restricted areas such as the laundry room, crew galley and dining room, crew gym, and crew training center.

Next it’s on to the expansive main galley where talented culinary artists prepare upwards of 12,000 meals and snacks a day for Carnival’s guests. The tour also includes a visit to the ship’s bridge and engine control room and informative Q&A sessions with the captain and chief engineer, respectively.

Behind the Fun tours can be booked through the ships’ shore excursion desk. The cost is $95 per person and capacity is limited to 16 guests per tour. Guests must be 13 or older to participate.

Delta's 2010 SkyMiles Program

Delta Air Lines unveiled details of its 2010 SkyMiles Medallion program offering frequent flyers new benefits in its global airline network, including a new Diamond level status and rollover Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs). The new SkyMiles Medallion program, rolling out over the next nine months, will retain benefits important to Delta SkyMiles and former Northwest WorldPerks customers, including unlimited complimentary upgrades on flights within the continental U.S. and select other regions.

New features include Diamond Medallion Status, a fourth Medallion level for flyers who earn 125,000 MQMs or fly 140 segments per calendar year, which includes complimentary Delta Sky Club membership, 125 percent mileage bonus for purchases, award booking and baggage fee waivers, and other exclusive rewards.SkyMiles also will feature Rollover MQMs, which allows customers to retain any MQMs earned above a Medallion threshold at the end of the year, supplementing the ability to earn status the following year.

For example, should a member accrue 40,000 MQMs in one calendar year, the 15,000 MQMs that exceed the 25,000 MQM Silver Medallion threshold will be rolled over to the following year. There is no limit to the number of miles rolled over, and the benefit takes effect immediately. There are also no ticketing fees for bookings for Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members, whether completed by phone, online or in person. Diamond and Platinum Medallion members also can choose from a menu of benefits, including bonus miles, the ability to gift Medallion status, Delta Sky Club day passes, and new systemwide confirmed upgrade certificates now redeemable on the day of departure.

Delta will continue to offer Medallion members unlimited complimentary upgrades on flights within the continental U.S., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and Northern South America; the ability to earn at least one elite qualifying mile per mile flown regardless of booking channel; preferred security lanes, priority boarding and seating and waived baggage charges for everyone in the itinerary; a 500-mile earning minimum for all flights for all members; no co-pays on mileage upgrades; and a 50 percent mileage and MQM bonus earning on premium economy fares.

The SkyMiles program will offer four Medallion elite levels in 2010, and status may be earned via MQMs or qualifying flight segments this year. Requirements for reaching Silver, Gold and Platinum status are unchanged for 2010. Silver Medallion is 25,000 MQMs earned, 30 segments flown; Gold Medallion is 50,000 MQMs, 60 segments flown; Platinum Medallion is 75,000 MQMs, 100 segments flown; and Diamond Medallion is 125,000 MQMs, 140 segments flown.

Celebrity Cruise New Onboard Program

Celebrity Cruises announced “Celebrity Life,” a new series of onboard programs built on the pillars of the brand -- dining, enrichment and wellness. “Savor” features eight new wine enrichment events, six spirits and mixology tastings, and more than seven interactive programs hosted by the ship’s executive chef and team.

The Savor series will feature “Celebrity Vineyards” “Signature Spirits” and “Food as Art.” “Discover” presents opportunities to learn a new language through an alliance with Rosetta Stone.

The “Beyond the Podium” enrichment series will be highlighted by the line’s new association with Smithsonian Journeys, the educational travel program of the Smithsonian Institution. Guests on select sailings will have the opportunity to hear from Smithsonian Journeys’ experts. Meanwhile, iPod addicts can learn iTunes tips and tricks, and novice and experienced computer users can take courses on Photoshop, Windows XP primers, BlackBerry tips and blog creation. In addition to participating in dance classes, guests can compete in the “Everybody Dance” competition, culminating in a vote for dance champions on every sailing.

“Renew” offers a goal-oriented approach to classes, seminars, and treatments designed to help guests look younger, feel better and live longer. Renew offers three areas of enrichment: “Ageless,” “Energy” and “Longevity,” each with its own slate of treatment selections, seminars and workshops. Within the Ageless series are seminars on skin renewal and youth-enhancing lifestyle tips, in addition to medi-spa cosmetic services such as Botox Cosmetic, Restylane and Perlane.

Following its rollout on the new Celebrity Equinox when it enters service July 31, the Celebrity Life program will be introduced across the balance of the fleet by the end of November.

Carnival's Cruise Vacation Protection Plan

Carnival’s Cruise Vacation Protection Plan now includes severe weather watch/warning protection as well as job loss protection. The enhanced features apply to plan purchases made July 15, 2009 and after. These enhancements are designed to provide your clients with peace of mind that their vacation investment will be protected in the unlikely event of severe weather or job loss. The severe weather watch/warning protection provides reimbursement in the event the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and/or National Weather Service issues or maintains a severe weather watch or warning within 48 hours of a cruise departure. Should the watch or warning affect either the cruise departure city or the guest's route to that city, the plan will allow for cancellation and reimbursement up to the full amount of the cruise cost.Another new weather protection feature provides that if a guest is traveling to the cruise departure port via a common carrier (airplane, bus, train, etc.) and inclement weather ultimately causes the guest to miss 50 percent or more of the cruise vacation, the guest may receive reimbursement up to the total cost of the cruise. The new job loss plan will provide reimbursement up to the total cruise cost if individuals who have booked a cruise and purchased the plan are subsequently terminated by their employer and have worked for that employer for at least one continuous year. The above enhancements will further strengthen the current plan which offers a variety of other benefits, including trip cancellation/interruption, trip delay, emergency medical evacuation, medical, baggage loss and baggage delay. The program also provides a 24-hour emergency assistance hotline. The plan must be purchased at least 14 days prior to the cruise departure date. Prices begin at $49 per person and vary by cruise length. For bookings made within 14 days of the sail date, the Cruise Vacation Protection Plan can be purchased at the time the booking is made.

What to Expect From an Alaska Cruise

by Melissa Baldwin Paloti, Cruise Critic, SmarterTravel.com Staff - July 14, 2009

The anticipation leading up to my second cruise—to Alaska—nearly killed me. The day my travel documents arrived from Princess Cruises I raced home, plopped down on my living room couch, and read through them page by page. I booked my shore excursions, memorized Sapphire Princess' deck plan, read member reviews on our sister site Cruise Critic, and researched our beautiful 49th state online and in travel books.
This trip, I could tell from the start, would be very different from my first cruise, a very typical fun-in-the-sun getaway: a seven-night sailing to the Southern Caribbean.
What especially intrigued me about visiting Alaska next was the sheer vastness of it. I knew that Alaska was big (more than double the size of Texas and one-fifth the size of the entire continental U.S.). But I couldn't grasp exactly how big "big" was ... or what the difference was between a glacier and an iceberg ... or how breaching whales looked and sounded. Most importantly: What on earth should I pack for Alaska's northerly climate?
Alaska certainly met my expectations size-wise (it's huge!), but there were plenty of things that took me by surprise both on and off the ship.
It's Not Always Cold!
Icebergs. Glaciers. Black bears. Brr, it's cold, right? Not always. I'd read that from June through August, average lows and highs in southern Alaska (where the ships are) range from the 40s into the 60s—and that lows as cold as the 20s have been reported. So I duly packed sweaters, sweatshirts, wool socks, and a colorful poncho for the rainfall I was also promised I'd encounter.
And wouldn't you know I visited Alaska during a precipitation-free, record-breaking heat wave! Temperatures soared above 80 degrees every day (that month, in fact, an all-time high temperature of 93 degrees was recorded on Alaska's Annette Island). At least the locals seemed to be as shocked and confused as I was. After a few hours attempting to explore Ketchikan in long-sleeved shirts and pants I felt as if I was about to pass out, so I hoofed it back to the ship for a dip in the pool—a dip in the pool in Alaska, with snowcapped mountains as my backdrop. Unbelievable. Thank goodness I packed a bathing suit.
Admittedly this is uncommon, but it's still wise to be prepared for varying degrees of weather, as the climate can change rapidly here and temperatures plummet in the evenings. Next time, I will pack for all seasons and maybe even see some of that rain!
The Perfect Family Vacation
I'd considered Alaska to be a bit of a "mature" destination (most of the people I knew personally who'd been there were grandparents and/or senior citizens), but the minute I boarded ship I realized I had it all wrong. There were lots of children onboard, mostly school-aged, and they all seemed to be having a grand old time. The biggest surprise was seeing so many multi-generational groups—families, and older folks traveling with their children and grandchildren.
Alaska is a great choice for families who want to introduce their kids to nature and science—something other than the surf-and-sand experience. And it certainly helps that Princess (and other Alaska-going lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival) offer innovative and extensive children's programs and facilities to cater to the one million kids who hit the high seas each year. On my sailing, organized onboard activities for children included a "Wizard of Oz" sing-along, and—more destination-specific—an "Edutainment" whale-watching program.
Land of the Midnight Sun?
Not exactly, unless you are much further north in the state (Denali Park does see some post-midnight sunsets; in Barrow, the northernmost community in the state, the sun shines for 84 straight days during the summer).
Still, the regions regularly visited by mainstream cruise ships see sunsets much later into evening than most folks are used to. In Juneau, for example, the sun generally sets after 10 p.m. It was weird to stroll out on deck after a late-seating dinner, completely stuffed, while it was still light outside! Juneau falls at about the same latitude as northern Scotland, which I learned also sees later sunsets in the summer months.
A word of caution, though: Sunrise is as early as sunset is late—day broke as early as quarter to four in the morning on my cruise. If you have trouble sleeping when it's light outside, pack a sleep mask. Even blackout curtains on cruise ships can let in some light (unless, of course, you are in a pitch-black inside cabin). I love sleep and can do it anywhere, anytime, but I can certainly imagine the brightness being an annoyance to those less fortunate.
Wildlife? What Wildlife?
One of my favorite cruise jokes begins with a passenger asking the captain, "What side of the ship will the whales be on?" Yet as silly as that is, I, too, wished I could stand in some magical spot and see whales breeching, eagles soaring, etc. Unfortunately, nature is unpredictable, and in seven days I saw absolutely nothing.
Surely, there were announcements of the "Whales on starboard side!" variety, but by the time I rushed to the railing, I literally caught the tail end of the action. During my organized hike through Ketchikan's Tongass National Rainforest, the closest encounter I had with wildlife was sighting a stray dog—no bears to be found. Princess also offers a similar excursion entitled Rain Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, which promises a meet-and-feed with Alaska reindeer. (Hmm, I hope they show up!)
If getting up close and personal with nature is important to you, I highly recommend booking an excursion specifically dedicated to whale watching, or another animal-intensive tour. Holland America's excursion roster includes an Alaska Bear Adventure by Floatplane, where cruisers are flown to a more remote area of the rainforest known for abundant wildlife; if you are staying overnight in Juneau, Carnival offers an exciting Evening Whale Quest aboard a high-speed catamaran through Stephen's Passage. There are still no guarantees, but fellow cruisers who took the gamble on Princess' excursions did not return to the ship disappointed.
Spring for the Balcony
On most big ships, there are essentially two Alaska cruise itineraries—the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska—and both offer opportunities to view glaciers up close, with sail-bys to Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm, or College Fjord. Whichever you choose, the scenery is breathtaking. Towering mountains capped with ice and snow set the stage for blue glacial ice and the occasional family of seals (if, of course, you are lucky enough to catch them).
That said, this is one voyage for which you may want to consider splurging on a balcony cabin; although you can always find a spot along the ship's rail for viewing, and many ships line deck chairs with cozy blankets and offer hot cocoa on deck, it's an unbelievable treat to sit on your verandah for a private showing. The night before we were scheduled to cruise Tracy Arm, I hung my breakfast order on the doorknob; the next morning, I bundled up (finally, all those sweaters I packed were put to good use) and sat outside sipping coffee and enjoying my pastries, all while the ship crept through the iceberg-strewn water. (Don't worry about missing what's on the other side—when the ship turns around and heads out, you'll see that from your balcony, too!)
That morning was one of the most memorable parts of the trip, and truly justified the upgrade from an inside or oceanview cabin.
Excursions Make the Trip
In Alaska, more than any other region I've cruised before and since, excursions are truly the way to experience the region. Surely, Alaska's ports of call have their own charm. Ketchikan features totem poles and funky boutiques. Sitka boasts a rich Russian and Tlingit heritage. Skagway has been restored to its Gold Rush roots and has a real Wild West feel—and a population of just 800.
But some things you just can't experience without ditching the crowded streets and made-in-China trinkets for an organized tour. I'll never forget sitting up front with the pilot in a floatplane as we soared over the meringue-like peaks of Taku Glacier, then feasting on a salmon bake at a wilderness lodge reachable only by air.
I also went fishing just outside Skagway. The actual fishing part of the day was a bit of a flop—I caught some seaweed and a suntan, and not one fish (surprise, surprise)—but the lake was exactly what I imagined Alaska to be: peaceful, untarnished beauty.
Did You Know?
The jet lag's not over yet: Depending on where you sail from, you may cross time zones while at sea! Read your daily bulletin for information on time differences, and be sure to synchronize your watch with the ship's time.
A glacier is an accumulation of ice, air, water, and rock debris or sediment; it is a large enough quantity of ice to flow with gravity due to its own mass. Meanwhile, an iceberg is a mass of ice found floating in the ocean or a lake, often formed when ice "calves" or breaks off from glaciers into the water.
When a large whale breaches (jumps high out of the water), the "slap" as they come back down can be heard for up to a kilometer!

In total, 17 week-long Alaska cruises will operate from the Port of Seattle from May 11 to Aug. 31, 2010, departing Tuesdays aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit. Celebrity Cruises Launches New Captain Club

Celebrity Cruises’ Captain’s Club – the top-rated premium brand’s three-tiered recognition and benefits program designed exclusively for its most loyal guests – has been redesigned and relaunched based on a series of member-inspired enhancements. Several of these new features are rolling out across the fleet on sailings beginning in July, while others will be introduced in intervals over the course of the year.

“Our most loyal guests deserve our loyalty in return, so we’re thrilled to offer them a vastly improved program,” said Celebrity Cruises President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. “Our new Captain’s Club gives them greater recognition, exclusive benefits, and a number of enhancements designed to make them feel like the center of our attention every time they sail with us.”

New features launching in July include the Captain’s Club Celebration, a one-of-a-kind social and
entertainment event available to all members; significantly improved Internet and laundry benefits for Select and Elite tier members; and a new onboard lounge exclusively for Elite members. The brand has even introduced a new theme for Captain’s Club, which doubles as its ongoing commitment to members: “The center of our attention.”

But these improvements are only the beginning. During the second half of 2009, Celebrity will expand the Captain’s Club with a variety of other new features, all of which will be announced prior to taking effect. “Our new Captain’s Club was designed based on a tremendous amount of research, feedback from our members, and advice from our travel partners,” said Hanrahan. “We want to ensure that we deliver every aspect to our guests’ utmost satisfaction, so we’re choosing to roll out the enhancements in intervals, beginning with improvements to the member experience onboard.”

A highlight of the onboard experience is likely to be the Captain’s Club Celebration. Soon available across the fleet, with the exception of Celebrity Xpedition, all members will be invited to this exclusive event once per sailing. Redesigned to be a highlight of every cruise, the spirited affair will provide the perfect opportunity to meet fellow members, chat with the Captain and senior shipboard officers, experience interactive cooking demonstrations, and enjoy the unique “CC Jams” performance by a variety of shipboard musicians.

For members interested in a quiet haven of their own, Celebrity is pleased to introduce the Captain’s Club Lounge at Michael’s Club, exclusively for Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions each morning and early evening. The new Lounge will offer a casual coffeehouse-style experience from 8AM to 10AM, with complimentary espressos, teas and other menu items, a variety of reading materials, and, on Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Equinox, wi-fi access.

Every evening from 4PM to 6PM, Captain’s Club Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions can return to the Lounge to enjoy socializing with fellow members, participate in a wine tasting event, or simply relax and enjoy a quiet, complimentary drink before dinner.
©2009 Celebrity Cruises, Inc. Ship’s registry: Malta and Ecuador. 09015390 • 7/2009 Page 1 of 2

In recognition of their desire to stay in touch with family and friends while vacationing, Elite members will now receive complimentary Internet packages, while Select members will receive a significantly discounted rate on any Internet package. Also within the new program, Captain’s Club Select- and Elite-level members can now enjoy new laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing benefits, based on the length of their cruise.

Celebrity also is extending its pledge to make members the center of attention by engaging many in the entirely new Captain’s Club Advisory Board, to ensure its most loyal guests always have a voice in shaping the program. Participation on the Advisory Board will offered online on a rotating basis to a selection of members across all tiers.

In addition to focusing on effectively delivering the new features of Celebrity’s Captain’s Club, Celebrity will continue to ensure that members enjoy all the program benefits currently available as well, and that they continue to have more opportunities to achieve higher-tier status.
“We will continue to provide members in every tier of the Captain’s Club with the recognition and rewards they’ve come to expect, while adding several new enhancements over the course of this year,” said Hanrahan. “We also want to ensure that our members have the opportunity to quickly advance to the next tier. That’s why we count tier credits versus purely counting cruises. Tier credits are earned simply by sailing with us, but we also award additional credits for cruises of 12 or more nights, and for booking certain stateroom and suite categories. As a result, members can more quickly advance to the next tier.” “What we’re rolling out today, combined with everything we’ll be adding to the program over the course of this year, will add up to what I’m confident will be the best loyalty program at sea,” Hanrahan added.

Prior Captain’s Club benefits and new enhancements available at launch include:
For Classic members (1-4 tier credits): Access to the loyalty desk and loyalty host; a premium onboard discount booklet; access to the new Captain’s Club Celebration event; a complimentary custom air request; pre-cruise specialty restaurant reservations; member reunion cruises; one-category upgrades; and an online newsletter

For Select members (5-9 tier credits): All of the benefits of Classic membership, plus priority embarkation, a complimentary wine seminar, priority status to shore excursion waitlist, an invitation to the senior officers’ cocktail party, 25% off any Internet package, complimentary pressing of two clothing items, and discounted laundry on cruises of 12 nights or more.
For Elite members (10 or more tier credits): All of the benefits of Select membership, plus a private shipboard departure lounge with continental breakfast, priority tender service, priority waitlist for dining room seating, elegant tea service, complimentary use of Thalassotherapy pool use on Celebrity Mercury, complimentary access to the Persian Garden (port days only), access to the new Captain’s Club Lounge at Michael’s Club, 90 free Internet minutes, one free item of dry cleaning, a complimentary bag of laundry (wash, dry, fold) and additional discounted laundry on cruises of 12 nights or more.

Carnival Installs Self-Service kiosks in Miami

As part of an ongoing effort to streamline the embarkation process, Carnival Cruise Lines has installed self-service check-in kiosks at its Port of Miami cruise terminal. The state-of-the-art kiosks provide guests with a fast and convenient way to check in for their cruise. To use Carnival’s self-service kiosks, guests must have pre-registered online and be a U.S. or Canadian citizen, or from a Visa waiver country. To access their booking information and check in via the kiosk, guests swipe their passport or the credit card used to pre-register online. Additionally, the kiosks accept cash deposits for guests’ shipboard Sail & Sign accounts. Once guests have successfully checked in, the station prints a receipt confirming that their registration process is completed and directs them to pick up their stateroom keys at a nearby desk. The kiosks are part of a pilot program at the Port of Miami and, if met with positive response from guests, will be expanded to the line’s other year-round homeports.

Close Loop Cruise Passport Requirement

Peter Deilmann Cruise Closes It's Doors

The end of summer will be the end of German river cruise line operator Peter Deilmann Cruises. The line has announced that it will cease its river cruise division at summer's end. Financial concerns are being blamed for the shut down.
Though the close is imminent, the company's UK managing director, Stuart Perl, said passengers booked on river cruises this summer have no need to worry as they will go ahead as planned. In October, the company's eight river cruise vessels will be sold off.
Interestingly, the announcement has not been officially made in the U.S.

Helpful Tips for Disabled Cruiser

July 1st, 2009 . by Candy B. Harrington

If you’re traveling with extra equipment, such as an additional wheelchair or a hoyer lift, try and take it aboard yourself instead of leaving it with the rest of your luggage, to be brought to your room later. That’s the best way to insure all of your equipment makes it on the ship.

If you take along a manual wheelchair, mark it clearly with your name or personalize it in some way, so it won’t be mistaken for one of the ship’s wheelchairs.

If you are traveling with a scooter or a power wheelchair, take an extension cord and a power strip. Outlets are limited in staterooms and sometimes they are not located in the most convenient places. Additionally, don’t forget to pack a converter if you need one.

If you requested any special equipment, such as a commode chair or a shower bench, contact your cabin steward if it’s not in your cabin when you arrive.

If you feel there’s a language problem and you don’t think the cabin steward understands your question, then go to the purser’s office and ask to speak to the Chief Purser or the Head Housekeeper about the matter.
After you get settled in, head down to the dining room and check on the location and height of your table. If it’s not manageable for you, talk to the Maitre d’ about a change.

Make sure and locate the accessible seating in the showrooms before show time, as sometimes it’s difficult to find when it’s crowded.

Arrive about 15 minutes early for the life boat drill. That way you will beat the crowds and still be able to take the elevator.

If you have any concerns about emergency evacuation procedures, don’t hesitate to ask your life boat captain.

Take a tour of the ship on the first day and locate the accessible restrooms on each deck. Make note of the locations for future use.

Last but not least, if you use a power wheelchair or scooter, bring along a manual wheelchair for use in port. This is especially helpful in Caribbean ports, where it’s difficult to find lift-equipped transportation. In the long run, it will help make your cruise more enjoyable.

Carnival Elation 4 & 5 Day San Diego Departures

A new four- and five-day cruise option featuring day-long calls at Cabo San Lucas will be added to the Carnival Elation’s existing schedule from San Diego in July 2009, complementing the ship’s popular three- and four-day Baja program (Ensenada/Catalina).
Carnival Elation – which emerged from a multi-million-dollar renovation in March 2009 with a host of new features -- will operate the West Coast’s only year-round three-, four- and five-day schedule, expanding upon the line’s industry-leading short cruise offerings. Roughly half of the “Fun Ship” fleet offers voyages of five days or less in length.
On its new schedule, Carnival Elation will operate a year-round series of four- and five-day cruises for a two-week period followed by another two weeks of three- and four-day Baja departures.
Beginning July 2, 2009, Carnival Elation’s four-day “long weekend” cruises will depart Thursdays and visit Cabo San Lucas. Two different five-day itineraries will also be offered. Five-day cruises departing Saturdays will feature the industry’s only itinerary that includes two full days in Cabo San Lucas, providing guests with a unique opportunity to enjoy one of Mexico’s most spectacular destinations. Five-day cruises departing Mondays will feature both Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.

Holland America's New Lanai Cabins

Holland America Line's latest Signature of Excellence innovation has received rave reviews by guests on ms Veendam. Similar in size to the premium line's spacious outside-view staterooms, the new, unique lanai accommodations were recently added to the ship and feature large sliding glass doors with direct access to the Lower Promenade wrap-around teak walking deck. Lanai staterooms will be added to ms Rotterdam this year and three other ships by 2013.
The addition of 38 lanai staterooms on Veendam are a key feature in the latest round of Signature of Excellence enhancements at Holland America Line. Thirty-two new verandah staterooms also were built on the aft portion of the ship, along with eight new inside staterooms. All staterooms aboard Veendam received new decor, modern wall sconces, carpeting, drapes, pillows and bed runners and resurfaced desks and vanities. Bathrooms saw an "extreme" makeover with new vanities and cabinetry.
Each lanai stateroom also features reserved deck chairs outside sliding glass doors that have a one-way mirrored coating to ensure privacy.
A final stateroom enhancement was the creation of 15 spa staterooms -- 12 outside converted to verandah in drydock and three other inside -- featuring a variety of exclusive spa amenities. The rooms offer their own ambiance with a decor reflecting natural elements and soft earth-tones. A counter-top water feature in each stateroom provides a natural, ambient background sound and artwork reflects serene images in nature. Exclusive spa treatments and a spa room service menu are offered only in these staterooms.

Carnival will port in Roatan

Two Carnival Cruise Lines ships will call in Roatan, Honduras, this week, despite the military coup in Tegucigalpa, the country's capital city. The coup has unleashed waves of protest throughout the country.
Carnival said it is "monitoring the situation and keeping in touch with authorities there," but that its Roatan contacts have advised that there are no issues in Roatan, a tiny Caribbean island that has become a popular cruise destination in the last five years.
On Sunday, the U.S. State Department recommended that American citizens defer all non-essential travel to Honduras, but added that outside of the capital, "reports from the rest of the country indicate that calm prevails, although there have been cases of occasional roadblocks."
The Carnival Valor and Carnival Legend are scheduled to arrive in Roatan on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. They are the only two ships calling in Roatan in July and August, the island’s low season.
As many as 28 ships call in Roatan during the winter. NCL, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean ship call there.
