People mover at Miami's airport set to open
The MIA Mover, an elevated train opening Sept. 9 at Miami Airport, will transport passengers between the airport and the rental-car center. The MIA Mover, which can carry 3,000 passengers per hour, will replace shuttle-bus service between the airport and the rental-car center. Travelers renting a car will take moving walkways on the terminal’s third level to the MIA Mover’s airport station and board one of eight train cars to the rental car facility.

Royal Caribbean’s 2012 Asia cruises deployment schedule for Voyager of the Seas
The ship’s inaugural Asia season will start on May 26, 2012, in Singapore, followed by sailings from Shanghai (Baoshan) and Tianjin in China.

Voyager of the Seas will offer vacationers a wide range of short cruises – three-, four-, five- seven- and eight-night itineraries in Asia – to longer, 14- to 18-night cruises in the South Pacific to New Zealand and Australia.
Voyager of the Seas will start its Asia 2012 season with a sailing from Singapore, followed by itineraries out of Shanghai (Baoshan) and Tianjin, to ports including Fukuoka and Kobe in Japan, and Busan and Jeju in Korea until October. Voyager of the Seas will begin 14-night sailings from Sydney, Australia on Nov. 24, 2012, to ports in Australia and New Zealand, while itineraries in early 2013 will include stops in Tasmania and the South Pacific.

Cruises will include the seven-night “Pearls of the Orient” and “Jewels of Asia” sailings, calling at various destinations in Japan and South Korea. Vacationers also can choose a repositioning cruise aboard Voyager of the Seas from Singapore to Fremantle, Australia, departing October 22, 2012, and returning on March 9, 2013. Voyager of the Seas will reposition to begin its winter season from Sydney on November 5, 2012.

Royal Caribbean Set to Charter Legend of the Seas to Chinese Group
Royal Caribbean will charter Legend of the Seas to the Xiamen municipal government and China World Cruises (CWC) for four months in 2012. During the four-month charter, Royal Caribbean will operate and market 21 three- to eight-night sailings from Xiamen, as well as Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong, to ports of call in Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Korea. The inaugural five-night charter sailing will depart from Hong Kong on March 20, while the first departure of guests from Xiamen will be on March 26.

NORWEGIAN UNVEILS MORE PROJECT BREAKAWAY STATEROOMS
Norwegian Cruise Line announces the balance of stateroom designs for Project Breakaway. Each of the 144,017 gross ton vessels will have approximately 4,000 passenger berths including Studio, Spa Balcony, Spa Mini-Suite, Oceanview, Family Mini-Suite, and Inside staterooms.

The ships will have 59 Studios on each ship which are specifically designed and priced for the solo traveler. These rooms also have private keycard access to the Studio complex and exclusive two-story Studio Lounge with a bar.

The ships will also have 28 Spa Baclony and 20 Spa Mini-Suite staterooms featuring tranquil spa décor and have easy access to the adjacent spa and fitness center, as well as complimentary access to the Thermal Spa Suite during operating hours.

The Family Mini-Suites will feature all the attributes of the Mini-Suite and are located in close proximity to the children's facilities, making it convenient and easy for families.

Each Ship will have 158 Oceanview staterooms. There are approximately 42 Family Oceanviews that sleep up to five guests and have a bathroom similar to the Mini-Suite and a modern double sink, bath tub and a second wardrobe for added storage.

There will be 449 Inside staterooms that feature two lower beds that can be converted to a queen-size bed. Many are connecting and sleep up to four guests. They are located on various decks throughout the ship and some are adjacent to the children's facilities.

Passenger Services Act (PSA) – Incorrectly referred to as the ‘Jones Act”
Many times guests want to link back-to-back cruises and may wonder why this is prohibited in some cases. Here is some interesting information about a law that restricts the combination of some cruises. Please note that the "Jones Act" governs cargo, not passengers.

The Passenger Services Act (often inaccurately/incorrectly referred to as the "Jones Act") prohibits ships of non-U.S. registry from embarking and disembarking passengers at two different U.S. ports. Such travel would constitute point-to-point transportation between two U.S. ports, a practice prohibited on foreign flagged vessels.

An exception to this general rule allows passengers to be transported between two U.S. ports if the cruise itinerary includes a port call at a "distant foreign port". Distant foreign ports do NOT include Canada, Mexico, Central America, Bermuda and most Caribbean islands. South America and the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) do qualify as distant foreign ports.

Thought for the Month
I recently returned from a trip to Alaska. Although I’ve done two previous cruises, this was my first trip that included Fairbanks, Alaska. I hope this little story explains why I love to travel.

Our flight out of Fairbanks did not leave until 10:20 pm so we had the whole day without a car to explore the city. We decided to do the Riverboat Discovery tour which I highly recommend. As we were walking through the village, we heard someone behind us say “I’m trying to catch up with this lovely couple” and that chance meeting shaped our experience in Fairbanks. We introduced each other and before I knew it, 4 enjoyable hours had flown by. During this time, I learned the following:

• They had been married for over 45 years
• They had lived in Fairbanks for over 40 years
• They came to Fairbanks when the husband got a job on the Alaska pipeline
• They had a garden that the moose liked to raid, although the wife did not like to cook
• Although the wife had a larger fish mounted on the wall, the husband actually won money for the fish he had mounted
• They took us to the North Pole and Salmon Bake for dinner (yes we got in the car with a couple who showed us their guns and let Bill hold a bow and arrow used to hunt caribou.

Although we only knew this lovely couple for less than 5 hours, we had a wonderful time with them and our visit was the highlight of our trip to Alaska. You can SEE every destination in the world, but you can not EXPIERENCE the destination until you meet the people..

Wishing you a great weekend

Frequently Asked Questions About Hurricane-related Travel Insurance

Q - When do I need to buy travel insurance for my trip to be protected against a hurricane?

A Travel Insured plan must be purchased not later than the day before a tropical storm or hurricane is identified and named by the U.S. National Weather Service in order for the insured trip to be protected against that storm and the effects of its resulting weather pattern. Once named, the storm is no longer "unforeseen" as required for coverage.

Q - What are the covered reasons for Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption that can be caused by a hurricane?

All of Travel Insured's plans under the Worldwide Trip Protector brand umbrella can provide Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption coverage when:
• Weather causes complete cessation of common carrier services for at least 24 consecutive hours.
• The traveler's primary residence is made uninhabitable by hurricane, flood or other natural disaster.
• The destination accommodations are made uninhabitable by hurricane, flood or other natural disaster.

Additionally, Travel Insured's Worldwide Trip Protector plan and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plan can provide Trip Interruption coverage when:
• Mandatory evacuation is ordered by local authorities in the destination due to a natural disaster or hurricane. There must be 50 percent or less of the total trip length remaining after the evacuation ends for Trip Cancellation coverage to apply.
• When the insured's arrival at the destination is delayed and causes the loss of 50 percent or more of the scheduled trip duration due to reasons covered by the Trip Delay benefit (described below).
Q - What are the covered reasons for Trip Delay that can be caused by a hurricane?

All Travel Insured's plans under the Worldwide Trip Protector brand umbrella can provide Trip Delay coverage when:

• A weather-caused delay of the insured's common carrier occurs for either six or more hours, or for 12 or more hours, depending upon the specific plan selected.
• A delay is caused by a documented traffic accident when the insured or his or her travel companion was en route to a departure, whether they are directly or not directly involved.

Q - Is any coverage provided when the cruise line or tour operator changes my travel itinerary due to a hurricane?

Yes. Travel Insured's Worldwide Trip Protector and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plans include a coverage called Change of Itinerary / Missed Port of Call. It can provide coverage when the insured passenger who prepays for a non-refundable shore activity in a cruise port of call, or a scheduled non-refundable stop on a tour, misses the prepaid activity due to a change of itinerary. The passenger can be reimbursed up to $300 with the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, or up to $750 with the Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plan, unless the missed activity is rescheduled during the course of the trip.

Q - Is any coverage provided when a common carrier travel delay due to a hurricane causes me to miss my scheduled cruise or tour departure?

Yes. Missed connection coverage is included in several plans. The Worldwide Trip Protector and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plans can provide coverage when as a result of a common carrier delay of three or more hours due to weather the insured traveler misses his or her cruise or tour departure. The same coverage in the Trip Protector Lite Expanded plan can apply for a common carrier delay of six or more hours due to weather causes the missed departure. Each plan, up to the maximum plan-specific limits, reimburses costs to rejoin the trip as well as meal and accommodation expenses, and non-refundable payments for the unused portion of the tour or cruise.

Q - When is the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade a good option to buy for hurricane-related coverage?

Cancel for Any Reason coverage is a good option for travelers to buy who want the ability to cancel their vacation when a hurricane is threatening, but not yet arrived, at their travel destination. It is also valuable for those who want the ability to cancel their travel in adverse weather conditions even when their common carrier is able to transport them to their destinations. These reasons, not covered within the standard Travel Insured policies, are covered with the Cancel for Any Reason option

Mandatory Documents Needed to Go On a Cruise
Passport or
Original birth certificate or
Certified copy of birth certificate
Visa, if applicable

Failure to provide proper documentation may result in refusal of entry onto the ship. In addition, a valid passport must expire no less than 6 month from the date of debarkation

Visa for Panama Canal Cruise
U.S. citizens transiting the Panama Canal as passengers, regardless of their intention to disembark from the ship or not do not need to obtain visas, or pay any fees. For more information visit this website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_994.html

Ask me about the February 3, 2012 Panama Canal cruise sailing from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego. I have some great prices, but cabin availability is limited.

Effective Aug. 28, 2011 a Tourist Tax applies to all visitors staying in Venice.
Hotel guests are required to pay the tax directly to the hotel. The charges must be paid directly by the guest and cannot be "covered" or pre-paid by the tour operator.
The tax does not apply to children 9 and younger and the maximum number of taxed nights per stay is 5. Children 10 - 16 receive a 50% discount. The amount of tax varies according to the category of hotel along with some other parameters.

Cash Accounts on Cruise Ships
If you set up a cash account, it is your responsibility to monitor the remaining balance as the cruise line may not send you notification until the morning of debarkation. As a general rule, regardless of whether you set up a cash or credit card account, it is a good idea to check your account balance every couple of days to resolve errors when they occur.

For all the folks with cell phones. One of my clients shared this with me and I got her permission to share it with you. I am not endorsing anything nor do I guarantee that it will work. Just sharing information so please take it as such.

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

FIRST (Emergency)
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

SECOND (Hidden Battery Power)
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

THIRD (How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? )
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone: *#06#.
A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.

If your phone is stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.

FOURTH (Free Directory Service for Cells)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial:
(800) FREE411 or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise 2012 is 90 percent sold, but cabins do remain available at this time!
From its inception, The Smooth Jazz Cruise has been dubbed "The Greatest Party at Sea," to the point where we will soon be including that moniker in the cruise title.

But that title has particular significance for the January 2012 sailings. Never before has The Smooth Jazz Cruise had a larger, more star-studded lineup. Though the rave that "Everyone Will Be There" is a bit over the top, actually based on the lineup below “Everyone Will Be There!

RCL Radiance of the Seas Renovations
Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas will sail away from the Victoria Shipyards in British Columbia today after a $20 million renovation which adds many of the features found on Oasis and Allure of the Seas.

Radiance will end up with the same number of restaurants as Oasis and Allure, but without 150 Central Park and Johnny Rocket’s. This includes Samba Grill Brazilian steakhouse, the casual Park Café, the Asian Izumi, Rita’s Cantina, Quill & Compass Pub, Giovanni’s Table, the Boardwalk Doghouse and the upscale 16-seat Chef’s Table.

Royal Caribbean was careful to balance the number of restaurants that charge service fees and those that don’t. For example, the Boardwalk Doghouse, which is free, serves up to 1,200 hot dogs a day on Allure of the Seas. The most upscale experience is Chef’s Table, which serves 16 people a five-course dinner paired with wine for $95 per person.

Also being added to Radiance are three inside single staterooms, an oversized outdoor movie screen, enhanced Wi-Fi throughout the ship, and the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, where certified staffers care for children age 6 to 36 months, often until midnight. It seems parents are eager for a night out while on vacation.

Cruise Mystery: Is a Royal Caribbean Ship Headed for a New Korean Cruise Line?
According to a report in the Korea Herald, a local travel company, All That Cruise, is acquiring a ship from an "overseas cruise line" to begin operating in January 2012 under the name of Hallyu Star. The ship originally pictured in Herald piece? Is it Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, or none of the above? (Interestingly, the photo has since been removed from the story.)All That Cruises' CEO James Lee would not reveal the name of the ship to the Korea Herald for legal reasons. Another report, from Korean Website KBS World, said the ship would be transferred from a "U.S. cruise operator" in November 2011, and that it's currently sailing the Caribbean Sea.
So which ship will All That Cruise acquire? Not sure, but according to the Herald, the line is currently raising funds to purchase a vessel and applying for licenses from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. The plan is to attract Koreans taking family holidays with sailings that focus on onboard performances by major entertainers, as well as traditional Korean cultural entertainment.

Carnival Magic to feature disco musical
The Carnival Magic's entertainment will include a musical built around disco tunes, a magic show and a game show parody. "The Groove Line," named after Heatwave's disco-funk hit from 1978, will be a "funky journey through the city streets and iconic discotheques of the 1970s," and will be choreographed to songs by artists such as KC and the Sunshine Band, the Jackson Five and Sister Sledge. The magic show, "Destination: Unknown," stars Jason Byrne, who has appeared at the Riviera, Tropicana and Venetian hotels in Las Vegas, according to his website. Carnival said the show will open with Byrne "appearing out of thin air piloting a helicopter" and will be the largest show ever staged on a Carnival ship. "Win! The Game Show" is a parody of TV game shows that Carnival describes as "wild and crazy." There will be opportunities for audience participation. "The different and twisted games comprise a travelogue that guides the audience to exotic and exciting places, from a Nascar-style racetrack to the Las Vegas Strip," Carnival said. The show's soundtrack features songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Eagles, Shania Twain and Ricky Martin. The Magic also will feature singing and dancing waiters in the Italian-themed Cucina del Capitano; an acoustic guitarist in the RedFrog Pub; entertainment acts in the Ocean Plaza; the Punchliner Comedy Club; and "Superstar Live" karaoke, in which participants perform with a band and backup singers. The 3,690-passenger Magic is scheduled to debut in Europe with a series of seven- to 12-day Mediterranean cruises operating May 1 to Oct. 16. Following a 16-day transatlantic crossing, the Magic will launch seven-day Caribbean cruises from Galveston, Texas, on Nov. 14

Other additions include a new Vintages wine lounge; a new Royal Babies and Tots Nursery; enhanced digital “wayfinding” screens for guests to find their way around the ship; and new 3-D technology for viewing movies.
On the entertainment and show side, Freedom of the Seas also now has the “DreamWorks Experience” with character breakfasts and a parade, and, starting next month, the “Imaginocean! Puppet Show.”
Radiance of the Seas enters her lengthy drydock on May 20, according to Freed. That ship will emerge after June 10 with many features already mentioned above, along with the addition of many popular dining concepts on the line’s newer vessels -- including Samba Grill, Giovanni’s Table and Rita’s Cantina, to name a few. The same venues will be added to Splendor of the Seas in fall.
